If you’re thinking of visiting London in 2020, a stop in South Kensington, to the V&A museum, should be high on the list. This wonderfully fashion centric destination will be home to 300 items curated for a show, Bags: Inside & Out. From all sizes of items in which we carry our belongings, expect to see the original Fendi baguette, a Fabergé egg bag by New York’s Judith Leiber to Marc Jacobs one-off for Louis Vuitton. Whilst we wait for the doors to swing open to this exhibition in April, let’s think about what bag will be ideal for a city break. Yes, the crossbody is the bag that lets you be hands-free as you roam. Here are the 10 crossbody bags that will work well with London’s vibrant scene.
Bolt for this one
Want to channel a London designer? Consider the Bolt bag from Sophie Hulme. It may well be the last chance to get your hands on one of these as Sophie is closing her business after 11 years, unfortunately, due to ill health. Available in a variety of colours. Price £495.
Soft neutral tones
This woven suede leather bag is the Framework bag from Mango. Ideal for casual days, pair with jeans, white top and whatever type of footwear, from white nikes to pumps. It’s lightweight with multiple pockets for easy storage. Price £35.99.
This is the bag that can see you transfer from day to night. The Petra bag from Matt and Nat is available in three colours. The long strap can be detached so you have a top handle evening bag. This is casual as well as elegant whilst being sustainable – the lining is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Price £215.
Round and about
Looking for a bag that stands out, opt for the Quilted Round crossbody bag from Zara. Don’t be put off by the chain strap as it has a fabric shoulder section, so it will be comfortable to wear all day. This is your bargain option, priced at just under £20.
When you need a bit more space than a camera bag, opt for the lovely leather Beat Croc crossbody from Coccinelle. Not only is this bag in this season’s croc effect, and in a colour that can transcend seasons, this bag is versatile and will be one bag that will be worn long after the city break. Price £315.
Not a crossbody, however, I know there are city break lovers who love a backpack. For lightweight and in spring time blue, head to Longchamp, for Le Pliage Club backpack. If blue isn’t your hue, choose from another 13 colours! Price £80.
Make your mark
With a familiar camera shape but with an added top handle, from Marc Jacobs, the Sure Shot crossbody has that urban feel, with its wide shoulder strap. The double J logo against the neutral rock grey saffiano leather, makes this bag hard wearing and ready for any city break. Price £335.
If you want to immerse yourself in British fashion, head to Burberry for vintage check in this understated and elegant D ring box style crossbody bag. You will be right at home with this London brand. Price £690.
The London fashion scene is renowned for its fun and eclectic looks. Why not have fun with your bag and adopt one of the season’s trend, the fringe embellishment. Don’t be fooled by the fun, as the Gum Two crossbody in silver has two compartments closed with a single zip. Price £65.
Last but never least
For an overt designer look, in a classic monogram print, look to Louis Vuitton, the Alma BB bag which can be worn crossbody due to the length of the shoulder strap. This bag can trace its roots to the urban art deco styling, ideal for a city break. Price £915.
With any one of these 10 crossbody bags, you’ll have lots of choice for a bag ideal for a city break. Will one of these be spotted whilst visiting the bags’ exhibition at the V&A museum, when the doors open on 25 April 2020? The show will run until the end of the year.
Here’s to adding the crossbody to the gift list and hoping there is one to open on Christmas Day!
