Guide to Autumn/Winter 2023 fashion styles

The Autumn/Winter trends are now well documented.  However, most of us don’t tend to really tune in until we get closer to the season.  Now is the time to find inspiration as we officially move into Autumn (1st September up here in the northern hemisphere).  And there’s a treat for everyone.  For those of you who have invested in classic lines, you may well be dusting off an item or two from the back of the wardrobe.  Those who have yet to, enjoy this as a mini guide to the classic shapes and styles revived, that just never date. And when it comes to the bag accessory of the season Bagwhispers is here to the rescue.

But before you start hunting down or dusting off your statement accessory, take in an edit of the fashion styles of Autumn/winter 2023/4. If you’re sitting comfortably, feet up, pause Netflix, for a rundown to the six Autumn/winter fashion styles:

The HOUR GLASS look

Grab a belt and pull in that waist.  Maybe opt for a bit of shoulder padding too.  Whether it’s a coat, jumper and skirt or dress, let’s celebrate some body curving.  There’s a lot written about black coats for this season but take a note from Bottega Veneta for brown with a hint of shine.  Even the tops and skirt outfits had a nod the 1950s Paris; bonjour Balmain!

Handbag choice: Handbag or tote bag and of a generous size.  No need to scale it down.

HOLLYWOOD glamour

Going out for a night? Don’t shy away from turning up the volume.  The easiest way to channel your inner silver screen goddess, is to opt for metallics, a bright colour or head to toe in black.  Golden rule, go with a dress shape to enhance your curves. Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Max Mara reminded us all how to make a modern look from 1930s Hollywood.

Handbag choice: Finding a handbag in the same colour and texture as your outfit.  Simple.

Let’s pause for PRINT

There’s always room in winter to incorporate a print into a look. Whether you’re keeping it to your coat, jumper or skirt.  Needless to say, Burberry always provides a masterclass with its print.  Checkmate!

Handbag choice: The safe bet is the handbag or small tote.  Burberry and Max Mara were only a few designers who presented a crossbody bag. The majority kept the bag handy, especially when this season’s looks are all about clean and classic silhouettes.

Big on BLAZERS

Yes, I know what I said about grabbing a belt and cinching in your waist.  The one item that seems to want to ignore this rule is the blazer.  Go oversized and keep it colourful as Prada and Roksanda.

Handbag choice: Carry a handbag or slim tote.  You want to avoid bulking up the extra fabric with a shoulder bag.

Cool and CASUAL

Everyday casual looks weren’t overshadowed by the heritage fashion era looks.  In fact, it was one of the treats of the catwalks to see fashion for less informal days.  Let your outfit take some structure, whether it’s from a wide collar, a belt around the waist or soft tailoring.  Keep the colour palette minimalist.  Take inspiration Chloe, Ferragamo or JW Anderson.

Handbag choice: Just like the blazer outfits, the top tip here is to carry a bag (handbag or tote bag) that is one colour.

SINGLE minded

As the season is dominated by simple and classic, there’s plenty of standout opportunity for dressing yourself head to foot in one colour.  For casual days, think neutrals like Brunello Cucinelli.  For evening looks go bold like Givenchy or dramatic like Balenciaga.

Handbag choice: Just handbags!
