When it comes to a special occasion which bag is that you reach for and have your event needs covered? Some would say the classic clutch bag. But anyone who has spent a day at the races or at an English wedding, where you are expected to go from day to evening effortlessly; might want to have a bit more space in the bag. Hands up who’s going to the Royal Wedding in Windsor this May?
Without revealing too much of what’s inside a girl’s handbag, some of us need to carry spare hosiery in case a ladder appears and a hairbrush in case the wind makes a hat just too risky to don. So, what are the clutch bag alternatives?
Backpacks and tote bags need not apply! Hobos and satchels are nowhere to be seen here. One might also say, step away from the crossbody, and if you have to, wear it as a shoulder bag only.
The bags that ooze elegance, style and glamour come in the following shapes and prices AND you don’t always have to carry a designer number to stand out from the crowd. Don’t take my word for it; take a look and judge for yourself.
Lords, Ladies and Gemtlemen, please be upstanding for the following bags and as every girl knows, when it comes to a bag for a special occasion you tend to shop by colour, as the outfit will come first…
Ice cream Pastels
This spring/summer, lilac has appeared. However, favourites such as a pale blue and pink blush are available. Two of these beauties can be handbags or all of them can be left to dangle from your shoulder. Those with chain straps that don’t have a fabric shoulder section aren’t included – you can’t have a chain imprint on a shoulder in the summer – just won’t do!
The second colour trend for SS18 is the bold primary colours. Ideal to accent against a monochrome outfit to add that splash to catch the eye. Naturally, I’ve assumed you will all be stepping away from a white dress for any weddings – it’s tradition to assume the bride will be in white;-)
JW Anderson’s Green Pierce bag @£1095 at Harvey Nichols. Emporio Armani’s blue bag with red handle @£360 at Harvey Nichols. Calvin Klein’s Yellow Saddle bag @£110 at House of Fraser. Mango’s Red Cylinder Suede bag @£22.99. Furla’s Electric Blue Ducale bag @£365.
Not quite pastel and not as bold as the primaries; from teals and turquoises to burnt orange and fuchsias – when a colour trend just doesn’t work with your outfit or your skin tone. Thank you to these lovelies, you can still make your outfit pop!
Coach’s Blue Swagger bag @£295 at House of Fraser. Hobb’s Burnt Orange Sarah Suede bag @£99. Paul Smith’s Swirl bag @£385 at House of Fraser. Mango’s Fuchsia Suede bag @£35.99. WtR’s Turquoise Abigail bag @£290 at Harvey Nichols.
If you want to channel your inner elegance, stay neutral and opt for an off white, silver accent, soft gold, there are a mix of shoulder bags or top handle handbags to choose from. These are classics to have in your wardrobe as you will call on these throughout your lifetime!
Aspinal of London’s Ivory Midi Mayfair bag @£495. Coccinelle’s Arlettis Metallic Straw bag @£340 at House of Fraser. Kate Spade’s Cameron Street Byrdie bag @£268 at John Lewis. Vivienne Westwood’s Gold Thunderbolt bag £360 @House of Fraser. Carvela’s Sadia Raffia bag @£59 at House of Fraser.
Make it monochrome
When you can’t beat a black or white outfit, here are the bags to pick up to contrast. And the saddle suede bag in black comes with an off white crochet wide label, adding a modern twist.
There you have it – over 20 bags to choose from for your special day out this summer. Whilst there are plenty more available, the ones above will guarantee you soft appreciative sounds from those around you. One of these stunners is coming with me to Royal Ascot!
Looking forward to seeing your beauties out and about this summer, full of your winnings from a day at the races or brimming with confetti to shower the newly weds.
