Well hello to the girls who are getting in on the backpack action! Once the domain of the boys heading to and from the office, carrying laptop and gym kit; now as I walk around the city by day I spot more and more girls with their bags on their backs. AND this stands true when I exclude the teenage girls with their Fjällräven packs and the ever popular Longchamp Le Pliage nylon backpacks. Here are 10 different backpack styles.
Be bold
For those who embrace colour, choose between one of these bright beauties. One that has elegant clean lines in this season’s orange-red hibiscus hue and another in juicy yellow to rock more casual days. On the left, the Alina slim backpack in leather from John Lewis will accommodate a 14 inch laptop. Priced at £100. On the right, from Denmark, the sustainable brand grünBAG. The Alden backpack can rock a street style look in the city but can hold its own when taken on a hike in the countryside. Available from €161.
White out
When you want a bag to stand out rather than clash, opt for white. A classic summer colour, here you have a big hitting designer brand and a minimalist Scandinavian brand. On the left, from Givenchy the leather quilted backpack can change its top line shape. Priced just under £1000 at £995. On the right from a popular Swedish brand, the structured bag from Sandqvist, the Vilda backpack is a mix of organic cotton and leather. Priced at £155.
Be neutral
The spring and summer always welcomes the pale tones and here are two backpacks that ooze softness. There’s always one bag that stands out in the collection from All Saints and the pale grey leather Vincent backpack offers the flexibility of two strap options. Originally priced just under £300, it is now available in the mid season sale at £208. To the right, if you are looking to keep your sustainability credentials in tact, Fablou offers a backpack in silicone; a 100% vegan bag. The Cosmopolitan comes in 3 colour options but this blush bag is in the sale and is now £59.
Soft edges
When straight lines aren’t your thing, seek out the curves. On the left, from Matt and Nat who produce bags in non leather materials, the Aries Berry backpack gives a strong top arc angle in one of this season’s colours, natural brown. Price £115. On the right, the red leather drawstring backpack comes from Burberry. I love the nod to the their classic trench through the eyelets usually found on the coat’s belt, but oversize here on the neck of the bag. Priced at £1190.
Be square
Break away from the traditional backpack shape and go boxy and high on function. Two contrasting bags both provide stand out through their shape. On the left, the backpack experts Knomo always offer function. This laptop backpack known as the Harewood can carry a 15 inch laptop in a padded inner pocket. The square shape has a leather trim finish. Price £199. On the right, from Rains, you have a useful waterproof backpack with rubberised handle and straps. Choose from lilac or the grey option featured here. Priced just under £100 at £95.
