Something for the weekend – the alternative top handles

A key bag trend for spring and summer is the short-strap bag. The SS’23 runways featured models carrying small to medium handbags – there wasn’t a crossbody in sight. For those of you who think handbags are too formal, and will never be persuaded to take off your long strap cross-body bag, may I try and seduce you? Here are five favourite ‘alternative’ top-handle bags that rock a modern vibe.

This edit is truly international with US, European and Asian designer brands. The good news, the short strap bag style can be worn on the shoulder; the top tip – is to keep it slim, with a nod bag to the revival of the original 1990s Fendi baguette bag. So, strap in and enjoy this whistle-stop tour of five designer top-handle bags, all easily spotted on instagram.

From New York, but spotted in Paris last month, Emmaline, the designer behind Emm Kuo, showcases the gorgeous soft top handle Waverly bags, giving you an effortlessly elegant top handle bag for a night out.

The Dutch bag brand Ree Projects based in Amsterdam brings us the Riva bag. Whilst the design ethic is minimalist this bag has a great impact with lots of appreciative eyes on the street.

The vegan fashion bag of choice is the Inez shoulder bag which I’m delighted to report is back with its gentle curves. From California bag brand Melie Bianco. Here in yellow but is also available in pink.

For those of you who can handle modern and traditional. I love the combo of a classic metal frame opening, surrounded by soft and curved marine blue leather. This is the Boh bag from the Korean design brand gu-de.

Last but by no means least, is the German brand Aigner. Whilst they are German by name and in their Munich location, their style is Italian. The Lorena bag scrams Italian passion.

This Saturday Special has been all about my favourite bags on instagram in February. And like many, I have a fair collection of crossbody bags and never rush into carrying a handbag. However, the above has convinced me that it isn’t all about boxy formal bags and I’m beginning to like how the designer handbags for SS’23 are shaping up.
