It was another digital fashion launch, the AW’21 runways were virtual. And with the lockdowns the impact on creativity could have left us with many reinterpretations of Bridgerton’s Regency romantic outfits, which seemed to be the only fashion being talked about at the start of 2021! However, the designers in New York, Milan, London and Paris treated us to textures galore, from chunky knits a la Chloé, to figure hugging sheer dresses and body suits, thank you Tom Ford! But what about the bags?
The bags were present, in a variety of distinctive sizes with different embellishments for the autumn and winter. But the good news is many of these shapes and finishes have been seen before and not that long ago. So for the lucky ones out there, you may be able to pull out a bag from a previous season and still be bang on an AW’21 trend!
The AW’21 bags to carry are (and hoping you might have one or two already to dust off):
- Oversized tote bags
- Chain strap bags
- Mini and micro sized handbags or shoulder bags
- Embellished or heavily textured bags
- And some Designer icons are back!
Before casting your eyes over the visuals, here’s a note on how to wear the bags or which AW’21 women’s fashion trends to match them with. Here’s a summary of the women’s fashion trends:
- Mini skirts and dresses – opt for a top handle or small sized shoulder bag
- Puffed out jackets and coats – a tote bag or shoulder bag but to be carried under arm
- Knits – go big on the texture of your bag
- Glitter – keep the colour of the glitter dress, top or skirt on the bag
- Figure hugging body suits or sheer overlay dresses – mini or micro bags, so not to detract from the dress drama!
Now let’s dive in and get the inspiration from the design houses stretching from New York to Paris, via London and Milan:

Welcome back to the Classic bags

And just adding a bit extra – Easy Access
This last bag style to share with you is less of an AW’21 trend but an increasing necessity – with the need to grab your mask or contactless payment (thinking past the previous essentials of lipstick, keys and phones) how about opting for a bag that has an easy access side pocket or smaller attachment…

There’s a lot to love about the autumn/winter fashions; fantastic colours, figure hugging and floaty, warm padded outer layers and textured knits. The bonus is that the bag shapes and styles could be in our wardrobes already and all we have to do is recycle them by matching them to the right outfit – lucky for you if you one of the iconic designer bags – Gucci Jackie bag anyone?!
Enjoy the wardrobe planning!
