Here’s your guide to SS’20 fashion trends. It’s your quick way to get ready for when the Christmas and New Year sales are finished and the stores start filling up with the new fashion for your spring and summer wardrobe. There are 5 key trends to put on your radar:
- Colour – whilst Pantone has identified classic blue as their colour of 2020, be ready for the citrus. Think lime and tangerine
- Length – short shorts! Out go the cycling shorts from SS’19. Make your legs longer with hot pant style shorts
- Print – it’s a 1990’s revival – the return of polka dots – ditch those stripes now!
- Shapes – think structure. Full blown corset or at a minimum, pull in at the waist with a scarf or rope belt
- Fabric – crochet and leather but keep both in light colours (keep away from the brown and blacks)
So what does this mean for your handbag accessories?
Colours for SS’20
Good news there is more to choose from than just citrus green and orange! If you’re opting for white, the trend is wear white from head to toe. Also blue hues were on lots of the runways. Top tip: your bag can be any colour as long as it is a colour! Use a bright colour to contrast the white or citrus outfit. But if going for a blue outfit, keep the bag in the same palette, but use a different hue.
Short shorts for summer
Get those legs out, make them look longer by rocking the hot pant style of shorts. And two bag styles work with this trend. You can grab the oversize tote bags or the 1990’s under the shoulder baguette bag. Top tip: with the shorts, go for a bag that compliments the dominant colour in your outfit. No accent planning here.
Don’t join the dots!
Remember Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman in 1990, at the polo in a flowing polka dot dress? Well the dots are back. This spring and summer, go bold, whether black and white, or an outfit with panels with differing sizes of dots. Top tip: let your outfit do the talking and the bag is either neutral or in the same colour way as your outfit. No contrast here.
Hold up or in!
Embrace the bra and corset as outerwear. However, if this is going too far for you (you’re just worried about catching a chill!), the softer option is to pull in at the waist to achieve that structural look. For the belt go textural using a rope belt OR use a scarf – it’ll be the season to embrace the scarf but not for the neck. Leave the neck for chunky and short (collar length) necklaces. Top tip: whether you need to carry a small or large bag, the bag is worn best as a shoulder bag as not to distract from your top body.
Move over the 90’s, here comes the 70’s!
Whilst the 1990’s is being revived, there is one era and its fashion that has also made its way back, the crochet and brightly coloured leathers of the 1970’s. Crochet is for the tops, bright leather for dresses and trousers which can be fitted or baggy! Top tip: Go for a handbag and keep it bright too.
There you have it, the 5 key fashion trends for Spring and Summer 2020. You now know the styles, fabrics, prints and shapes to keep your eyes peeled for.
